Fall can happen to all of us but it’s more prevalent to seniors for different reasons.
- As we get older our skeletal bone becomes frail to injury.
- Medications that can lower blood pressure. Postural hypotension can cause dizziness does contribute to fall.
- Eye sight, macular degeneration of the eyes is common as we get older. This contributes to loss of clarity or vision.
- Distance perception is another factor as we get older
- Loss of balance and agility.
Any of these or a combination can contribute to fall. Exercises like Tai chi, yoga, balance exercise can keep your upper and lower strength. Good diet, sleep and additional protein supplement will prevent muscle wasting. It’s very important to fall-proof your living area such as:
- Clear walk ways from clutters.
- Area rugs should be secure.
- Hand rails in walk ways, bathroom and shower.
- Shower chair so they can sit when they get tired.
- Comfortable rubber (sole) shoes with good support for mobility.
If you know a physical therapist or occupational therapist have them evaluate the house and living areas. If a senior lives alone or left alone in the house, make sure they have a functioning emergency band or life alert bracelet or necklace. Try to established a regular phone call with your loved one if you are unable to check them on a regular basis this way it will give them sense of security that someone is checking on them.
