Depression in Seniors what you need to know.

I never thought the extend of depression among seniors till we have our home care. Majority of the time we as a family are so busy with our own life that we forget

to reach out with our parents/loved ones on a regular day. As we get older we loss our physicality, senses and independence. The life and name we build is totally forgotten and sometimes ailments absorb us that we become increasingly dependent to others with our basic needs. As a caregiver or family members it’s very important to be able to recognized the signs and degree of depression

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
  • Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
  • Irritability, restlessness, or having trouble sitting still
  • Loss of interest in once pleasurable activities, including sex
  • Decreased energy or fatigue 

The three main causes of depression in older people are:

  • Poor physical health. Let their primary physician know what is happening sometimes they need temporary medications.
  • Social isolation. Engaged them with social activity, asked other family members to call or visit regularly. This will give them something to look forward too. Listen to what they say.
  • Hearing loss. Have them check for hearing loss. People with hearing loss tend to isolate themselves as they can’t engage to conversation.
